10 Years of Blonde: One of the Greatest Albums Ever Made

It’s officially been 10 years since Frank Ocean released his second and most recent studio album, the iconic and beloved Blonde. As time has gone on, it only seems like this project gets better and better with time. In 2024, Apple Music named it #5 on their top 100 albums of all time list. With both critical acclaim and love from the fans, you would think Frank Ocean would build on the momentum, but he’s decided to do the exact opposite.

When the days became weeks, weeks became years and years became a decade, questions really started to arise. Is Frank Ocean done with music? With only a handful of singles to his discography over the past 10 years, and limited public appearances, its hard to really discern what Frank is focused on. Some have theorized that he dropped Blonde knowing he wasn’t coming back.

The day before Blonde dropped, Frank released the Apple Music exclusive visual album Endless. Fans and critics deduced that it was a tactical move to fulfill his contract obligations with Def Jam, to then drop Blonde the next day, completely independent. Was it calculated, giving himself one album he knew would be lucrative to live out his life on? Did he just realize he was done with that chapter of his life? Or has he been working on music ever since? Nobody knows.

The thing that still draws fans to Frank to this day, other than the love for his music, is the allure of an artist who appears intentional with every little move they make. For many, it feels like a sign of true artistry. While Frank has expressed interest in fashion and filmmaking, his jewelry brand Homer has been mostly inconsistent and fans have only heard rumors about any films he’s working on.

While it’s unclear what Frank has dedicated his time to creatively since slowing down his music release schedule, one thing that is obvious is that people are drawn to his mystique. Whether he drops in the next 10 years or not, Blonde and his debut album Channel Orange are timeless, and take new life-forms every so often to increase their influence and consumer base, and it all happens while Frank watches from a distance, remaining one of music’s most sought-after artists.
