Every time Prettifun releases a new project, it’s always a special treat. Two years since his last official release, Prettifun finally releases his next project, Pretti Loves U 2, after months of delays and scrapped projects. His follow-up album to Funhouse is a 12-song, fully self-produced project with transitions and very well-crafted production.
Prettifun was originally supposed to release You Can Die Laughing, which was a darker and more grim take on his bubbly hyperpop sound, but the project was scrapped, with Prettifun saying “the project would’ve sucked” and contemplating his retirement from music. Fast forward to today, Prettifun continues to build his colorful and vibrant world instead of delving into a new path.
There’s so much flavor and so many colorful elements splattered across this project, and Pretti fully producing this album attests to that. Every song has its own melodic progression, where a certain synth or drum will be heard at the beginning of the song, then completely altered in a creative way near the end.
We can see this exemplified to the max on songs like “Steps” or “Nobody,” where the songs start off with a dance-inspired drum pattern before exploding into distorted 808s and trap production. This album is also much more reflective compared to his other projects, talking about his mental state and looking back at previous hardships in a more reflective and positive way.
This album also being 12 songs in length is definitely necessary, because any longer and it would’ve felt repetitive, so this length is perfect for avoiding filler. Overall, there really isn’t much negative to say about this album. It’s very well executed, and it’s safe to say that Pretti has created his own lane within this scene that no one can replicate.
